The action-fantasy sequel The Old Guard 2 finally premiered exclusively on Netflix, ending a five-year-long wait. The film continues the saga of immortal warriors navigating new challenges and even deadlier enemies. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, the film picks up where the first left off, diving deeper into the lives of these seemingly invincible characters.
One of the most talked-about newcomers to the franchise is Tuah, played by Henry Golding—a mysterious and formidable figure whose name carries powerful historical meaning. The origin of the name “Tuah” has sparked curiosity, especially as it draws directly from Southeast Asian legend.
In The Old Guard 2, Henry Golding’s character Tuah is introduced as an immortal warrior with a complex past. While the film itself dives deep into themes of loyalty, time, and conflict, the name “Tuah” is far more than just a creative choice—it’s rooted in Malaysian legend. In an interview with Cape USA, shared on July 7, 2025, Golding publicly explained that the name was inspired by Hang Tuah, one of the most iconic warrior figures in Malay folklore.
In Malay folklore, Hang Tuah was a fabled warrior of the 15th-century Melaka Sultanate, renowned for his fierce loyalty, unmatched combat skills, and iconic weapon, the magical keris Taming Sari. His legendary exploits were not just limited to battles but also involved political missions, which are still told across Malaysia today and have become symbolic of honor and heroism.
For Golding, naming the character “Tuah” was more than just a nod to his heritage. He also wanted to provide a meaningful representation of an underrepresented cultural icon on the big screen. He noted in the interview that he wanted to reflect his roots while contributing to a film that spans centuries and continents.
In The Old Guard 2, Tuah’s character embodies the same sense of dignity, resilience, and tactical brilliance that defined the historical Hang Tuah. Tuah is shown as a fanatic of the immortals and he also maintains a library of all their ancient lores. In the sequel, he takes up the responsibility to help Andy learn more about her new found mortality and also how the team can tackle the dangerous immortal named Discord, who wants to hunt them down.
The decision to blend folklore with modern cinematic storytelling underscores the film's commitment to diversity—not just in its cast, but in the origins of its characters.
Before joining the cast of The Old Guard 2, Henry Golding had already built an impressive resume across genres. He rose to fame with his breakout role as Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians. Following that, Golding showcased his range with roles in A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, and Monsoon, where he played more grounded, emotional characters.
Golding also stepped into the action genre with Snake Eyes, where he portrayed the titular ninja-turned-hero. That role positioned him as a rising action star—making his casting in The Old Guard 2 both fitting and exciting. Some of his other notable projects include The Gentlemen, Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Nine Perfect Strangers, and Another Simple Favour.
In joining the ensemble cast led by Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, and Matthias Schoenaerts, Golding enters a universe filled with ancient warriors and ethical dilemmas. Yet, his unique background and cultural influence make Tuah a distinct addition. With The Old Guard 2, Golding continues to build a career marked by versatility and intentionality—choosing roles that resonate personally while also expanding the scope of genre storytelling.
