In Treatment: Who's Who in HBO's Season 4 Revival

More than ten years after it last aired, In Treatment returns this week for its fourth season on HBO. The groundbreaking drama has been revived with an entirely new cast, compete with its third therapist, this time played by award-winning actor Uzo Aduba. Here's who's joining her in the show's month-long revival:

Uzo Aduba as Dr. Brooke Lawrence

Stepping into the show's central therapist role — previously played by Gabriel Byrne — is Uzo Aduba. A Los Angeles-area clinician, Dr. Brooke Lawrence helps a trio of patients navigate various modern-day concerns, including the COVID-19 pandemic and recent social and political upheaval. Aduba is best known for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, for which she won two Emmy Awards. More recently, the gifted actor played Shirley Chisholm in the limited series Mrs. America, another Emmy-winning role, and voiced Bismuth in Steven Universe: The Movie and Steven Universe Future. Beginning Friday May 21, Aduba can also be seen in Amazon’s new anthology series Solos.

Joel Kinnaman as Adam

Playing Brooke's on-again, off-again boyfriend Adam is Joel Kinnaman. The Swedish-American actor first rose to fame in Swedish productions like Easy Money and the Johan Falk franchise, before crossing over as homicide detective Stephen Holder in The Killing. A series of high-profile television roles in House of Cards, Altered Carbon, Hanna, and For All Mankind followed, in addition to a turn as Rick Flagg in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad film.

Anthony Ramos as Eladio

Fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton will recognize Anthony Ramos from his dual roles in the show's original Broadway cast as Philip Hamilton and John Laurens. Following Hamilton, Ramos transitioned to Hollywood, where he broke out in Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It reboot, A Star is Born, and Trolls World Tour. In In Treatment, he plays Eladio, a patient who works as an aide for a wealthy family. Ramos is set to reunite with Lin-Manuel Miranda next month, starring in Warner Bros.’ filmed adaptation of Miranda's In the Heights.

John Benjamin Hickey as Colin

Another stage alum turned film and TV star, John Benjamin Hickey plays Colin, a millionaire white collar criminal who attempts to reckon with his new life upon his release from prison. Hickey has had a lengthy career filled with memorable character work in projects including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Flags of Our Fathers, The Good Wife and Jessica Jones. In 2011, he won a Tony Award for his performance as Felix Turner in Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart.

Quintessa Swindell as Laila

Quintessa Swindell plays Laila, a distrustful teenager struggling to establish an identity apart from her overbearing family. An up-and-coming actor, Swindell appeared in an episode of Euphoria and headlined Netflix’s teen drama Trinkets. Swindell can next be seen in Voyagers opposite Colin Farrell and Tye Sheridan, and as Cyclone in DC Comics’ Black Adam.

Liza Colón-Zayas as Rita

Actress, producer, and playwright Liza Colón-Zayas plays Rita, Brooke’s longtime friend and confidant. In Treatment is one of Colón-Zayas’ two new projects debuting this month: she also stars as Bina, Anna’s (Amy Adams) physical therapist, in Netflix's The Woman in the Window. She's also appeared in David Makes Man, Titans, and multiple episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

In Treatment Season 4 premieres May 23 on HBO, with two new back-to-back episodes debuting each Sunday and Monday night through June 14.
