A new Garfield series is in the works at Nickelodeon after Viacom acquired the rights to the comic-strip cat

Viacom has acquired the rights to Paws, Inc., the company behind cartoonist Jim Davis' Garfield and U.S. Acres. The deal will allow Garfield -- previously the star of Garfield and Friends on CBS and The Garfield Show on Cartoon Network -- to be turned into a new animated TV series. Nickelodeon also will be able to create products and "location-based experiences" involving Davis' comic-strip characters.
