Former Letterman writer Bill Scheft tweeted the news of Kalter's death, which hasn't been confirmed. "RIP Alan Kalter. A lovely man, and as my old boss might say, a 'perfect stooge....," Scheft tweeted. Kalter, who was 78, was Letterman's announcer for 20 years, from 1995, when he replaced Dave's longtime announcer Bill Wendell, until Late Show with David Letterman signed off in 2015. Kalter would often appear in scripted comedy bits on the show, with Letterman referring to him with the nicknames Big Red" and "TV's Uncle Jerry." Kalter also hosted Late Show's Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interview. Before Late Show, Kalter was the announcer for numerous game shows, including To Tell the Truth and The $25,000 Pyramid. UPDATE: Alan Kalter's wife, Peggy, confirms to The Hollywood Reporter he died Monday at a hospital in Connecticut.
