Showrunner Jay Martel explains that some of the absurd ideas that his writers came up with a year ago concerning gun violence, immigration and even the Statue of Liberty have been upstaged by the reality of the Trump era. "How do you heighten a situation for comic effect in a world that’s heightening faster than anyone can imagine?" he writes in a New Yorker essay.
