Awkwafina's semi-autobiographical comedy has been picked up for a second season one week before its Jan. 22 premiere. The renewal comes one week after Awkwafina won a Golden Globe award for her performance in The Farewell. Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens is inspired by the rapper, comedian and actress' real life growing up in Queens, playing Nora Lin, who lives at home with her dad, played by BD Wong, and grandmother. “We are in awe of Awkwafina’s creative genius on every level and we could not be more excited to embark on a season two with the entire Lin family in Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” said Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, co-heads of original content for Comedy Central. During a TV press tour session this morning, Awkwafina commented on the increasing number of shows led by Asian-Americans, recalling that Margaret Cho’s All-American Girl was a "big event" 25 years ago for Asian-Americans. "When you look at the progress we’ve made since then, it’s been incredible, but I think that these shows still kind of stick out as very genre-specific Asian-American shows,” Awkwafina told reporters. “But I think that slowly and slowly, as these shows become more ingrained as American — as we are — they’ll start to flow out of the genre and (be considered) more broadly.”
