In a lengthy New Yorker interview, Costas says any perception that he feels like NBC fired him is wrong. "That is an absurd misimpression that somehow has grown out of this," he says. Costas was also asked about NBC's Later, which he hosted from 1988 to 1994, after Late Night. "Well, in many ways, the best thing I ever did was Later," he says. "It had a texture to it. You could have Elie Wiesel one night talking about coming face to face with Josef Mengele, and you could take a pie in the face the next night from Soupy Sales. I mean, that literally happened."
