Owens was previous executive producer Jeff Fager's heir apparent for years, and has been serving as interim boss since Fager's exit last fall. It was reported in October that Owens and 48 Hours producer Susan Zirinsky were competing for the job. Instead, she was named CBS News' president and she has appointed him to lead 60 Minutes. "I have known Bill for almost 30 years. He is a tremendous leader and will be a great partner to everyone at CBS News," Zirinsky said in a statement. "To be named the executive producer of 60 Minutes is an inspiring responsibility and a privilege,” Owens said in the official announcement. “I am honored to work alongside the best journalists in the business who cover the most important stories from around the world. I promise that will never change.”
