The second installment of the USA true-crime anthology series will be called Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, telling the story of the woman convicted of killing her ex-husband and his second wife. Peet will play the title character, described as the perfect Southern California blonde wife and mother, and Slater will play her handsome college boyfriend husband. Slater and Peet succeed Connie Britton and Eric Bana as Dirty John's leads. According to Variety, "the second installment will be based on another true tale of love gone wrong, centering on a story that spans the 1960s to the ’80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah Winfrey deemed one of 'America’s messiest divorces' even before it ended in double homicide." Dirty John moved to USA after airing its first season on Bravo. This will be Slater's second USA series after the departing Mr. Robot. “The first season of Dirty John was a story of twisted love and coercive control and both these insidious elements are also present in and integral to the story of Betty Broderick, whom I have wanted to write about since I became a writer,” said series creator Alexandra Cunningham. “I can’t wait to see Amanda and Christian bring it to life.” Broderick's story was originally made into a 1992 CBS TV movie, titled A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story, starring Meredith Baxter and Stephen Collins.
