Janis, who died on March 1, starred on the ABC sitcom as Fred McConnell, Mindy's widower dad with conservative values who would later become the conductor of the Boulder Symphony Orchestra. Janis had more than 100 film and TV credits, including a brief recurring role on Frasier. Off-screen, he was a fine jazz trombonist and the co-owner of an art gallery.
