“We have a really close relationship,” Essman tells The Daily Beast's The Last Laugh podcast of her Curb co-star. “We are very close friends and get along really well and understand each other really well. The key to getting along well with Larry is to have really good boundaries. I understand Larry and Larry understands me. One of the reasons we can speak to each other in that despicable way is because we know we’re just playing. There’s nothing real about it at all.” As for Seinfeld, Essman says: "I actually did audition for Elaine. I remember Larry wasn’t there, but Jerry was. But you know, I really think that Julia (Louis-Dreyfus) was the right person for that part."
