In recent years, Chappelle's standup comedy has trafficked in sexism and transphobia while railing against "cancel culture." So Lauren Michele Jackson finds it interesting that Chappelle is all in in supporting police brutality protesters. "Better a back-seat driver than a roadblock, I suppose, though people of any age who are out in the streets, fighting for all black lives—trans lives very much included—might be less than impressed by Chappelle’s show of solidarity," she says. Ultimately, she says of his recent special, "while other celebrities in this moment have rushed to their front-facing cameras in order to say something, Chappelle lands on the contradictory crux of how to say nothing."
