Frequent champion Joey Chestnut ate 74 hot dogs on the Fourth of July, but ESPN's broadcast only showed 64 hot dogs due to a judging error and was wrong throughout the telecast. “We knew something was wrong right away and Joey confirmed it during his winner interview at the end of the live telecast,” ESPN executive John Suchenski told The Athletic. “After the broadcast ended, we revised the program with new commentary noting the possible error while the competition was ongoing, a corrected total, and a new interview wrap in the final segment. This revised program began airing in the 4 p.m. replay window on ESPN2 and in all following re-airs.”
