“I have to do Buckwheat,” Murphy says in a New York Times profile of going back to standup and his December return to Saturday Night Live. He also mentioned Gumby and his Mister Rogers parody "Mr. Robinson." Murphy says he decided to return as host of SNL for the first time in 35 years after committing to revive his standup comedy career. The 58-year-old Murphy plans to bring a new perspective to his standup, admitting that his past special Raw now makes him cringe. He also won't wear his trademark leather outfits. “Nah, man, you can’t wear a leather suit at 58,” he says. Murphy adds: “I now have a whole lifetime of experiences to draw upon. There was a time when I was at the center of everything, what I was doing, and how funny I was and how popular. I’m not at the center. Now my kids are and everything revolves around them.” Murphy also says he has no worries about returning to stage as a confident standup performer. “I’m still Eddie,” he says. “The way I look at things and paint pictures with words, I’m still that guy. I’m still going to be what I was. And then some.”
