Murphy revealed on the Present Company with Krista Smith podcast that after returning to host Saturday Night Live after 35 years on Dec. 21, he plans to go on the road and return to his standup roots. According to Deadline, Murphy said that after he hosts SNL in December, “… and then next year in 2020 I’m going to go on the road and do some stand-up.” Murphy didn't address whether his return to standup had anything to do with a rumored $70 million deal to star in a series of Netflix comedy specials. TMZ reported in July that Murphy was in negotiations with Netflix for "an undisclosed number of comedy specials." Murphy is already starring in the Netflix movie Dolemite Is My Name, which will be released in October.
