Ellen DeGeneres says she has no idea where "insane" no-eye-contact rule began

During DeGeneres' Zoom call with her staff Monday announcing that three of her top executive producers have been fired, the comedian brought up what she heard was an unspoken rule that prevented any of her employees from looking at her. “I don’t know where it started,” said DeGeneres, according to Page Six. “Please talk to me. Look me in the eye.” A former producer on Australia's Today first brought up that Ellen producers had a rule that nobody look at her.
