VanCamp, the female lead on the Fox medical drama who plays nurse practitioner Nicolette "Nic" Nevin opposite Matt Czuchry's Dr. Conrad Hawkins, has left the series after four seasons. The news comes four days after VanCamp surprisingly announced she had given birth to her and husband Josh Bowman's first child. "I hear the actress asked to be released from the show at the end of last season," reports Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "There was an effort at the time to bring her back in Season 5 — which she was opened to — but it did not work out. I hear there is still hope that she may return as a guest star in the future. But the Revenge alumna has stepped down as a series regular, and the storyline of her character, Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin, is expected to be wrapped up at the start of Season 5." VanCamp's Nic and Czuchry's Hawkins became love interests over the course of the series, culminating in Nic giving birth to their baby, a girl, in the Season 4 finale. Andreeva adds: "Fans already are bracing for the worst as Fox is hinting heavily about Nic’s fate in an ominous first promo for the Season 5 premiere." As TVLine's Rebecca Iannucci points out, VanCamp was missing in The Resident's Season 5 poster released earlier this month that only showed Czuchry. TVLine also notes that following the Season 4 finale, co-showrunner Peter Elkoff "teased a major, and potentially game-changing, development in store for Season 5, though it’s unclear whether he was referring to VanCamp’s departure." Although VanCamp is only 35, she's been starring on network shows for the past two decades: The WB's Everwood from 2002 to 2006, ABC's Brothers & Sisters from 2007 to 2010, ABC's Revenge from 2011 to 2015 and Fox's The Resident from 2018 to 2021.
