The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ black-tie event Saturday night included everybody from Steven Spielberg to Jennifer Lawrence to Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie and Tom Hanks. Yet there was no mention of the Harvey Weinstein scandal on stage. Accused sexual harasser Dustin Hoffman was greeted with applause, though the moment was uncomfortable, says Adam B. Vary, who adds: “The disconnect pointed to an industry still reeling to grasp a sense of its own center, and, perhaps, eager to escape the explosive headlines that have consumed Hollywood, if only for one night.”
