The series order caps a long development process to bring the iconic defense attorney, famously played by Raymond Burr, back to TV. Robert Downey Jr. was originally planning to star in a Perry Mason movie. Instead, he'll serve as an executive producer on the HBO series. In addition, HBO veteran Tim Van Patten is on board as an executive producer and director. Rhys plays Mason as the legendary criminal defense attorney in 1932 Los Angeles. This is the second upcoming series set in 1930s Los Angeles, after the 1938-set Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
