HBO Max's The Not Too Late Show with Elmo would seem like a natural Daytime Emmy contender since it's connected to Sesame Street, but it's competing for the Primetime Emmys because it's modeled after a traditional late-night show. "The reckoning that eradicates daypart distinctions may be coming, and it could be the networks — as they play with first windows while launching their own streaming platforms — that force the change," says Michael Schneider. Adam Sharp, who oversees the Daytime Emmys as head of the East Coast-based National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, says: “I don’t think that the current alignment as it is, is perfect." He adds: “You look at some of these shows and you say, ‘You know what, I couldn’t make a good argument either way that it belongs in daytime or primetime. And frankly, it often just comes down to venue shopping, where the show producers are saying, ‘OK, where am I more likely to win?’ I don’t think it’s in either Academy’s interests to have that being the differentiator.”
