The recurring segment, which debuted in 2012, is a "lose-lose situation, and how celebrities handle it shows a different side of them," says Kayla Cobb. "Could this be all scripted? Sure, most of late night shows’ off the cuff convos are planned out well in advance. But the spontaneity of 'Mean Tweets' seems hard to fake, and the way each celebrity chooses to defend his or herself from the digital attacks seems to nod to their personalities, or at least their brands. If it’s all fake, then it’s fake in a way that’s still telling."
