While Apu has been getting grief in the new documentary The Problem with Apu, The Outline points out that Mike Judge’s Fox animated comedy got it right with Hank Hill’s Laotian immigrant neighbor. “He was a character that was confident,” says Guy Aoki, founding president of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, which honored King of the Hill for the portrayal. “He didn't take crap. It wasn't what a lot of Asian-Americans fear, which is the wimpy Asian guy who gets taken advantage of.
