Titled The Testaments, Atwood's Handmaid's Tale follow-up is scheduled to be released in September 2019. "Yes indeed to those who asked: I’m writing a sequel to The #HandmaidsTale," the author tweeted this morning. "#TheTestaments is set 15 years after Offred’s final scene and is narrated by three female characters. It will be published in Sept 2019." The Testaments will be narrated by three female characters. Atwood's publisher announced that The Testaments has no connection to the Hulu TV series. As The New York Times notes, "the TV series has already gone beyond the scope of the novel, in effect satisfying fans’ desire for a sequel before Atwood could, and creating a somewhat awkward parallel fictional Handmaid’s universe that doesn’t reflect Atwood’s vision for a sequel."
