About seven years ago, the Oscar-winning actress became fascinated with the practice of death doulas, who assist families when a loved one is about to die. “The birthing and the deathing, the connection between people is just so deep,” she tells The New Yorker. “It’s like being in love.” She has since begun developing a television series about at-home funerals. “It’s supposed to be funny!” she says.
