The decision to bring back the Marvel series that ABC renewed Monday for a shortened 13-episode season for summer 2019 was ABC's decision and had nothing to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. As TV Line notes, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return after the premiere next May of Avengers: Infinity War follow-up Avengers 4, which should have implications for the characters on ABC's Marvel series. “Whatever they (at Marvel Studios) have planned, I cannot say,” said Dungey. As for speculation that Season 6 could be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s last, Dungey said: “I feel like Season 5 was their creatively strongest yet, so I don’t at the moment have any plans to think of Season 6 as the last season.”
