Netflix has given an eight-episode order to the comedy series based on the comedian and actress' 2020 book of essays with the same name. Survival Of the Thickest is part of an expanded relationship between Netflix and the host of The Circle, who starred in the streamer's Welcome to Buteaupia standup special and its hit romcom Always Be My Maybe. "Survival of the Thickest centers on Mavis Beaumont, played by Buteau," per Deadline. "Black, plus-size and newly single, Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life after putting all her eggs in one man’s basket, but she’s determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss." Buteau created the series with The Carmichael Show and New Girl vet Danielle Sanchez-Witzel.
