Gruden, who is reportedly ESPN’s highest-paid on-air employee earning $6.5 million a year, is expected to sign a 10-year, $100 million deal to return as head coach of the Raiders (the longest deal in NFL history). Gruden was Raiders head coach from 1998 through 2001, before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where in his first season he won a Super Bowl beating his old team. Gruden's departure means Saturday's AFC playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans will mark his final broadcast for ESPN. There was some concern that Gruden calling the game would be a conflict of interest because the Chiefs are a rival of the Raiders, but ESPN showed an image of Gruden meeting with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid on Thursday. Gruden and Reid worked together on the Green Bay Packers staff.
