Nielsen has been collecting Netflix data over the past two months as a test run for its new ratings service. As The NY Times reports, Nielsen said it “was able to determine how many viewers were streaming Netflix content through audio recognition software in the 44,000 Nielsen-rated homes across the United States.” But as The Times points out, the service is flawed in that it only counts TV viewership — computer, tablet or smartphone viewers are excluded, as well as foreign viewership.
