The Oscar-winning director made headlines early Thursday night when he said of Weinstein, "I believe a man shouldn't be condemned by a vigilante system. It's not easy what he's going through, either.” Hours later, after his comments caused uproar (and after an ex-playmate accused him of sexual assault), Stone walked back his comments. On Facebook, Stone explained that he was unaware of the extent of the Weinstein accusations. “After looking at what has been reported in many publications over the last couple of days, I’m appalled and commend the courage of the women who’ve stepped forward to report sexual abuse or rape,” he wrote. “I’ll therefore recuse myself from the ‘Guantanamo’ series as long as the Weinstein Company is involved.” In July it was announced that Stone had signed up to direct the two-hour opening episode of the Showtime series Guantanamo, which was to mark his first foray in scripted television.
