"We're officially two hit wonders," the Peacock girls group comedy proclaimed in a video announcing the Season 2 renewal. The news comes after Peacock promoted Girls5Eva with a "5YC" (Five Your Consideration) skywriting stunt over the weekend. The Tina Fey-produced, Meredith Scardino-created comedy starring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell is generating award season buzz. “We are so excited to continue Girls5eva alongside this incredibly talented group of cast and producers,” NBCUniversal television and streaming’s scripted content president Lisa Katz said in a statement. “It was hard to miss the immediate fandom that was born after the launch of this series. This aspirational comeback story is filled with heart and friendship, perfectly blended with catchy-songs and humor, and delivered by an exceptionally versatile cast. We look forward to following this group’s journey as they continue to hit just the right notes.” During a Girls5eva panel at the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend, Fey discussed how past problematic trends are being reevaluated. “We’re culturally looking back at stuff that we all took as totally normal, fun and just cool in the ’90s, whether it’s the way David Letterman dismantled Lindsey Lohan or an underage Britney Spears singing ‘Slave 4 U,'” Fey said. “We’re all looking back at those things now and being like, ‘Oh, we all cosigned that? Oh, that’s terrible.'” Fey also said she thinks streaming has been better for comedy. “Not that we go that hard, but because people are choosing to come to you, you don’t have to make plain rice," she said. "You can make something that isn’t maybe for everybody, but it’s delicious.” Meanwhile, Scardino said Season 2 won't be drastically different from Season 1. “I think the spirit of the show about trappy underdog women in their 40s going up against a behemoth and trying to do something hard and a little bit crazy, that will continue,” Scardino said.
