Lipton, who died Saturday from cancer, rose to stardom at age 22 in the 1968-73 ABC counterculture police series The Mod Squad, playing street-smart flower child Julie Barnes, one of a trio of Los Angeles undercover “hippie cops." The role earned Lipton four straight Emmy nominations for lead actress in a drama series and four Golden Globes nominations, including a Globes win in 1971. In 1974, she married iconic composer and record producer Quincy Jones and later had two children, Kidada Jones and the actress Rashida Jones. One of Lipton's final roles was in 2017 playing the mom of Rashida's character, Peggy Tribeca, on the recently canceled TBS sitcom Angie Tribeca. After divorcing Quincy Jones in 1989, Lipton returned to acting, playing Norma Jennings, owner of the Double R Diner, in Twin Peaks. “It was very scary,” Lipton told The Los Angeles Times in 1993. “I had a push-pull thing inside me that I wanted to do it…. I had become so insulated in my world as a mother, that I didn’t know how to pick up the phone and call anybody to put myself out there.” Lipton's final role was on the 2017 Showtime revival of Twin Peaks. “She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side,” Kidada and Rashida Jones said in a statement. “We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her.” “We can’t put all of our feelings into words right now, but we will say: Peggy was and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond,” the pair added. “She will always be a part of us.”
