Although the former Bachelorette had ramped up her criticism of The Bachelor franchise for not having a black lead amid the Black Lives Matter protests, Lindsay says she feels uncomfortable with the timing of Matt James being named the show's first black Bachelor. "I'm excited that there's a black Bachelor, I just want to say that," she said on Watch What Happens Live. "But I hated the time of it because it does seem like a reaction to what is happening in our country." Although ABC insists the recent protests had nothing to do with James' selection, Lindsay asks rhetorically: "Did a man have to die in such a public way on a national stage for you to say now is the time for us to have a black Bachelor?"
