In her 2005 standup comedy film Jesus Is Magic, Silverman says in character as part of a bit, "I'm glad the Jews killed Jesus. I'd do it again!" Her quote was recently turned into a meme and presented as if she said it outside of the context of comedy. And it was recently repeated by a pastor, who said he wished she dies as a result. "So, the person who made the meme knew it was comedy and intentionally repurposed it as real, knowing it would influence a swath of people who see it and share it everyday," Silverman explained on Instagram. "And that's America today. The incitement of violence based on lies and the disingenuous re-framings of truth."
