After wrapping up filming Showtime's four-part New York Times docuseries The Fourth Estate, a holdover camera crew directed by Jenny Carchman continued to follow Times reporters Russ Buettner, Susanne Craig and David Barstow as they delved into the Trump family's finances, discovering that Donald Trump received the equivalent today of $413 million from his father using "dubious tax schemes." The 18-month investigation was published Tuesday as a 14,000-word story. Showtime will air the resulting documentary on Sunday as The Family Business: Trump and Taxes. According to Indiewire, the documentary "has essentially been done for weeks, as the filmmakers waited for the Times to publish and to add scenes of the publication to the end of the documentary. Carchman was filming on Tuesday, less than a week before the scheduled airdate." Showtime had originally envisioned the documentary as an Oscars contender by releasing it in theaters. But the pay cable network opted to air it on TV this weekend, therefore nullifying its chances for an Academy Award for best documentary.
