The cable network has enlisted more than 40 past 90 Day Fiancé stars to film themselves in coronavirus quarantine for a five-episode limited series spinoff set to debut on April 20. Cast members began filming themselves and each other earlier this week. As TLC general manager and president Howard Lee points out, talking via computers and video chat “is already in their DNA." Crew members will also record cast members remotely for confessional interviews. “And they have no problem with this, the couples," said Lee. "They’re seizing this opportunity. I think that they’re actually really enjoying it, being able to show a part of their lives at home.” As Variety noted in a story published Wednesday, reality shows may prove resilient amid coronavirus TV show shutdowns. Lee emphasized that 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined is somewhat experimental. “This series will look very hot-off-the-press — it will look like the paint has not dried,” Lee said. “I think our audience is incredibly forgiving right now, and I’m hoping that they accept the way it looks. It will be messy!”
