The TV Academy changed its documentary eligibility rules after ESPN’s O.J.: Made in America and National Geographic’s Free Solo each won Emmys after winning the Oscar for best documentary. The TV Academy ruled that documentaries nominated for Oscars were ineligible for Emmy consideration. But that has resulted in many documentaries that tried and failed to earn an Oscar nomination now seeking Emmy consideration, putting the Oscar-nominated documentaries that didn't want an Oscar at a disadvantage.
