“The world has changed a lot in these ten years, and lesbians still belong on television,” The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken said while discussing The L Word: Generation Q at the TV press tour. As Jennifer Beals points out, in 2004, when The L Word premiered, "non-binary was a mathematical term." Showrunner Marja-Lewis Ryan said the idea of the new series is to explore “what has changed, and also what hasn’t" since the series finale in 2009. Ryan added she hopes story lines will provide “an aspirational queer narrative” rather than simply reflecting the negative experiences.
