The Canadian playwright and screenwriter was watching the musical family group The Cowsills perform on The Tonight Show when he got the idea for The Partridge Family, which ran on ABC from 1970 to 1974. Slade also created the 1972-1973 CBS sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie, starring Meredith Baxter and David Birney in a comedy about an interfaith marriage between an Irish Catholic teacher and a Jewish cab driver. Baxter and Birney would marry after the series (and later divorce).
