Apple TV+'s new shows premiering Friday feature profanity, violence, oral sex, masturbation and an orgasm. Last year, there were reports CEO Tim Cook ordered that Apple shows avoid showing gratuitous sex, profanity and violence. The key word is "gratuitous." Apple TV+ co-head Zack Van Amburg says Apple's warning to showrunners to not be "gratuitous" was “taken to an extreme and suddenly became something and that makes you realize how little people understand what that word means.” He adds: “If we were to start to impose certain things like ‘it has to be this’ or ‘it must only do this,’ we would start to pull at a thread of authenticity and potentially be a place that didn’t celebrate — as deeply and emotionally as we do — creative expression."
