Executive producer Brett Matthews says he was inspired by a college film noir he took for this week's format-breaking episode. "It was a really fun episode to let our production team, let our hair and makeup department, our wardrobe department, which is always so exceptional, really shine and really be front and center," he says. "We couldn’t have ended up with a better director slotting than Mike Karasick, who’s our director of photography, but has directed for us going back many years now. Somebody who gets that light and shadow and really embraced noir, and wanted to not just tell a noir story, but to tell a noir story in a manner consistent with the cinematic rules of the period. We really set a very strict test for ourselves in terms of what was noir, and what wasn’t."
