Since its debut the day after the first presidential debate on Sept. 30, Shepard Smith's CNBC news show has averaged 280,000 viewers, a small fraction of his viewership on Fox News. Even though he has twice as many viewers as timeslot predecessor Shark Tank reruns, Smith is losing to Fox Business Network's Lou Dobbs. “I don’t know where we’re supposed to be” in viewership, Smith tells The Washington Post. “We’ve had no discussions about ratings with our staff. None of our senior leadership team has ever sat down and talked about (it). What we have to do is build a great newscast . . . and then eventually people will come to that or they won’t.”
