The Wicker Man is turning into a TV show.

It's been 50 years since Robin Hardy's horror classic made its mark on audiences, and now it's getting the small screen treatment. Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish's The Imaginarium and Urban Myth Films are adapting The Wickerman for television with a script from Howard Overman (MisfitsWar of the Worlds).

The Wicker Man series does not have a home yet, but it is reportedly being pitched to different broadcasters.

Originally released in 1973, Hardy's The Wicker Man starred Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee and told the story of a police sergeant who travels to a remote Scottish island to search for a missing girl. When the devout Christian discovers the islanders worship pagan Celtic gods and the case of this missing girl is not what it appears to be, a horrifying truth reveals itself.

In 2006, a poorly-received remake starring Nicholas Cage was released. This TV adaptation will be the first reimagining of the story for the small screen, and will reportedly "explore the same themes of sacrifice, superstition and ritual" of the original.
