The latest victim of the shifting sands at CNN is John Harwood, who joined the network from NBC in 2020. He had served as White House correspondent and appeared on air as recently as earlier today.
Harwood himself announced the news in a tweet, saying "Today's my last day at CNN. Proud of the work. Thanks to my colleagues... Look forward to figuring out what's next."
"We appreciate John’s work covering the White House, and we wish him all the best” wrote CNN in a press statement.
Harwood reportedly had two years left on his contract, making him the network's second unexpected departure in the past month after Brian Stelter, who left after his Sunday show Reliable Sources was canceled in August. Both Stelter and Harwood had been targeted by conservatives for a perceived anti-Trump bias.
After President Biden's televised speech last night in Philadephia, Harwood tweeted "Biden's assertion that Trump and extremist Republicans pose a threat to American Democracy is, undeniably, true." He shared the same sentiment on air this morning, in what would end up being his last appearance on the network
Several of Harwood's CNN colleagues tweeted out their support after his announcement today.
"You are a total pro, Harwood. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed," wrote longtime CNN contributor Paul Begala.
"Best of luck in the future, John. I really enjoyed working with you," wrote CNN Senior Global Affairs analyst Bianna Golodryga. "I look forward to seeing what you do next!"
