Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur is set to executive produce and star in a new Disney+ series based on the true story of the California School for the Deaf football team. Kotsur's CODA co-star, Marlee Matlin, will join him as a producer.
The real-life story of the California School for the Deaf football team from Riverside, California is an extraordinary one. The Cubs Varsity players were considered underdogs, but they defied the odds by going undefeated for the entire 2021 season, winning the division championship game and earning a spot in the California State Championship game — a first in the school's 68-year history. Even more impressive, the team did so while playing a majority of their games against hearing teams.
Kotsur will play the team's coach in the Disney+ series, which is still untitled. The production plans to partner with the school and the California Department of Education to tell the team's story.
