On Sunday's Last Week Tonight, John Oliver gave a sarcastic shout-out to The Drew Barrymore Show, saying he watches her show "to figure out how she can possibly successfully pull off a segment in which a child makes a Shirley Temple while Stanley Tucci quietly drinks the entire glass of wine on a screen in the background. I don't know how you work your magic, Drew, but I want to learn. You are advancing this form."
Barrymore responded on Thursday with a prank of hanging signs for her show over Oliver's nearby LWT studio at their shared CBS Broadcast Center, which he hasn't been using since the pandemic started, preferring to shoot from a blank white void that he referred to last week as "Casper's a**hole." Barrymore then shouted out "suck it, Oliver!" and issued a vague challenge for him. "That used to be your entrance before you gave it up. Are you coming back to the building? Let's do this."
Co-host Ross Mathews said he screamed out loud when he was watching the show and saw the shout-out, and Barrymore then offered high praise. "The fact that John Oliver and his amazing team knows we exist, Rossi, I can't be more excited. I mean, they really did advance the form."
