Back in 1991, IFC and Bravo (which was a very different channel back then) had a cult hit with an unscripted series featuring indie film director John Lurie (Down By Law, Stranger Than Paradise) called Fishing With John, where people like Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper, and Tom Waits would simply go fishing with Lurie, and they'd film the strange conversations that ensued.
Since Lurie began suffering from complications of Lyme disease, he changed his artistic focus to painting. So why not create a new show called Painting With John? Seems that's a question Lurie himself isn't entirely sure how to answer.
"I was hoping that this show would be educational, but I really don't know what the f**k I'm doing."
Painting With John premieres January 22 on HBO.
