Few players can say they've scored two Olimpico goals, but then again, few players are Megan Rapinoe. Just seven and a half minutes into the U.S. women's national soccer team's bronze medal-winning game against Australia, Rapinoe launched a corner kick that curled straight towards the goal, sailed over Australian keeper Teagan Micah's hand, and landed in the net. The straight-from-the-corner goal is called an 'Olimpico,' named after a goal scored by Argentinian player Cesareo Onzari in 1924.
Rapinoe's 2021 Olimpico comes nine years after she achieved the same astounding feat during the USWNT's semi-final game against Canada at the 2012 London Games. At the time, she became the first player to score an Olimpico at the Olympics — and now, with two under her belt, it will be even harder for the competition to catch up.
Congrats to Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT!
