In this clip from Wednesday's episode of The View, Nico Santos speaks about the upcoming end of Superstore, and how the coronavirus really put a damper on what is normally a very emotional and celebratory event — a series finale wrap party.
"It was so bittersweet," he said. "Having to film a show during a global pandemic is so surreal to begin with, but it was hard because we were saying goodbye to everybody after six seasons of filming this wonderful TV show, but we couldn't have a proper send-off or proper wrap-up to the whole experience because of COVID. So it literally just ended. We did the last take, and they were like 'that's a wrap on Superstore,' and we were like 'okay.... I guess... goodbye, everyone?'"
Santos did say they're planning a big proper bash once it's safe to gather again. He also discussed Mateo's evolution, noting that the revelation at the end of the first season was his way into the character.
"When the show first started, Mateo was really just sort of this acerbic, sassy employee who was really snarky, and that was really all you knew about him... that he was hyper-competitive and super snarky," Santos explained. "Then they introduced this beautiful nugget of information about Mateo's character at the end of Season 1, which was he was undocumented. For me, when they told me that, it really just opened up this whole new world of understanding to who Mateo really is and why he is the way he is, and throughout the seasons, you see why the stakes are so high for him — because it's literally a life or death situation for somebody like Mateo."
Santos also thinks the fans are going to be really happy with how everything is tied up in the final episode.
Superstore airs Thursdays at 8:00 PM ET on NBC. The final episode airs March 24.
