AMC's latest series is a sci-fi romance anthology set in the near future. It depicts a world in which science has found a way to determine your soulmate, simply by measuring an imperceptible signature in the human eye. Each of the show's six episodes will tell the story of a different pair of soulmates, each offering a unique take on this shared phenomenon: what would it be like if you could take a test to determine your perfect match? What would that solve, and what wouldn't it?
The series, from creators Will Bridges — a writer for Stranger Things, who also co-wrote the "USS Callister" episode of Black Mirror — and Brett Goldstein — a writer on The Catherine Tate Show and Ted Lasso — boasts a fantastic cast to play its six pairs of predestined lovers. Here's where you may have seen them before:
Best known for playing Shiv Roy on HBO's Succession, Sarah Snook began her career in her native Australia, where one of her biggest early roles was as the lead in the Southern horror film Jessabelle . She then starred opposite Ethan Hawke in the Spierig Brothers' sci-fi film Predestination (and later opposite Helen Mirren in their spooky gothic film Winchester). She crossed over to America and snagged what is probably her most recognizable role outside of Succession, as an Apple employee trying to get a product launch off the ground in Steve Jobs. She also played Brie Larson's sister in The Glass Castle and appeared in a Season 3 episode of Black Mirror before landing the Succession role that kicked her career up several notches, and recently earned her an Emmy nomination. Most recently, she starred opposite Seth Rogen in HBO Max's An American Pickle.
Fresh off playing President Barack Obama in Showtime's The Comey Rule, Kingsley Ben-Adir is coupled with Sarah Snook in their episode of Soulmates. Until recently, the British actor was likely best known for his roles as Colonel Ben Younger on Peaky Blinders, as private investigator Karim Washington on the second season of The O.A., and as Mac on High Fidelity. In feature films, Ben-Adir recently earned raves at the Toronto and Venice film festivals for playing Malcolm X in the feature film directing debut of Regina King, One Night in Miami, which is set for a release via Amazon.
Playing one half in a pair of Southern soulmates is Malin Akerman, who is probably best known for her role as Lara Axelrod on Showtime's Billions. After an early ole in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Akerman landed her breakthrough part on HBO's The Comeback as starlet Juna Millken. She was then cast as Katherine Heigl's irresponsible sister in 27 Dresses, followed by what seemed like it would be a major breakthrough, as the Silk Spectre in Zack Snyder's version of Watchmen. She also played the titular role in the underrated and short-lived ABC sitcom Trophy Wife, mom to Taissa Farmiga in The Final Girls, and as a CEO in Hulu's Dollface.
Opposite Akerman is British actor Charlie Heaton, aka Jonathan Byers on Stranger Things. Earlier this year he starred as Sam Guthrie in the long-awaited superhero movie The New Mutants. He'll next star in the sequel to director Joanna Hogg's acclaimed indie The Souvenir, opposite Tilda Swinton.
Son of the great character actor Stellan Skarsgård and brother of Big Little Lies Emmy-winner Alexander Skarsgård, Bill has made a name for himself in the last few years. By far his best known role is the one you'd never recognize him from, as he played nightmare clown Pennywise in the two It films. This came on the heels of his turn on Netflix's poorly-reviewed early streaming series Hemlock Grove and a small role opposite Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina. He's also starred opposite Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2. On television, he was dynamite in the role of "The Kid" on Hulu's Castle Rock, keeping the Stephen King side of his career going strong.
London-born Nathan Stewart-Jarrett stars opposite Bill Skarsgård in their episode of Soulmates. Prior to this, Stewart-Jarrett has been best known for his roles on the British series Misfits — playing the time-bending Curtis Donovan — and as one of the main characters in the British TV series Utopia. More recently, he had a role as an interior-design assistant in Hulu's Four Weddings and a Funeral, and later this year he'll be one of the stars of the Jordan Peele-produced Candyman remake. On stage, Stewart-Jarrett earned raves for his performance as Belize in the Broadway revival of Angels in America.
Betsy Brandt is instantly recognizable for her role as Marie Schrader, wife to DEA agent Hank, sister to beleaguered Skyler, sister-in-law to master criminal Walter White, and avowed purple enthusiast on Breaking Bad. She's also co-starred in films like Magic Mike, TV shows like Masters of Sex and Life in Pieces, and as Michael J. Fox's wife on the short-lived Michael J. Fox Show.
If you don't primarily know JJ Feild as Neve Campbell's real-life husband, you may know him from his recent role in the Oscar-nominated film Ford v. Ferrari, or opposite Idris Elba in Netflix's series Turn Up Charlie. He portrayed Major John André on AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies, and James Montgomery Falsworth, one of the Howling Commandos, in Captain America, The First Avenger.
Prolific character actor David Costabile has appeared on more TV shows than some people watch in a lifetime. Most recognizable as the sweet-natured meth genius Gale Boetticher, who met a most unfortunate end on Breaking Bad.,he turned up a few years later on Billions as the drug-and-sex manic Wags. He's played a vain newspaper editor in The Wire, a remorseless killer in Damages, and an unethical lawyer in Suits. He's also appeared in the Steven Spielberg movies Lincoln and The Post.
Sonya Caddisy played Liz Dudley on the beloved-but-cancelled AMC series Lodge 49, twin sister to the show's protagonist, played by Wyatt Russell. She starred as Clara on the BBC historical drama The Paradise, and Catherine of Braganza on the British miniseries The Great Fire. She also played the Oracle of Gaia on the Greek-myth-themed Syfy series Olympus, and Hester, a synthetic person (robot) on the British series Humans, which also aired on AMC.
Spanish actress Laia Costa enjoyed an acclaimed breakthrough starring role in the 2015 film Victoria, a propulsive German crime thriller that was filmed all in one take. She and Search Party star Alia Shawkat played lovers who have sex every hour for 24 hours in the indie comedy Duck Butter. Most recently, she played Isabel in director Dan Fogelman's sprawling, interconnected family drama Life Itself.
Canadian Actor Shamier Anderson got his start as an ensemble dancer in Disney Channel films like Camp Rock 2 and Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, and then as a dancer in the Canadian teen drama The Next Step. In 2016, he was cast in the role of Xavier Dolls in the Syfy supernatural western Wyononna Earp. Recently, he starred in Halle Berry's directorial debut Bruised.
Soulmates premieres on AMC October 5th at 10:00 PM ET.
