When Orions first appeared on Star Trek: The Original Series back in the late 1960s, all we knew of them was that they were green-skinned slave women who hypnotically danced for the pleasure of men.
Fast forward 900 years into the future, and Star Trek: Discovery introduces us to Osyraa (Janet Kidder), an Orion woman who is the leader of the Emerald Chain, an interstellar crime syndicate, and who has become the main villain of Season 3.
"She is a very determined, highly intelligent, somewhat fierce leader who doesn't always employ the most diplomatic methods to get what she wants," Kidder says of her character, who was just revealed for the first time on Thursday's episode. "I think 'hatred' is the wrong word. I think that she doesn't necessarily believe that they deserve to be held in such high esteem. She works very hard for her people to advance themselves, and yet they don't enjoy the same reputation as the Federation. So I think possibly 'envy' is a better way to go than hatred."
New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery premiere Thursdays on CBS All Access.
